On September 11, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officially announced the end of the largest cyclosporiasis outbreak in the US, which affected 21 states across the country. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will continue its investigation into the iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico that was linked to the cases. Over the past week, the US recorded 165 new cases of cyclosporiasis, a smaller week-to-week increase of 0.5% compared to the 1.9% increase recorded last week. The slowdown of cases and end of the outbreak is unsurprising, as the cyclosporiasis season typically lasts from May 1 to August 31. Some states have stopped reporting new cases due to the seasonality of the illness.

9/17/2026 — On September 11, the CDC officially announced the end of the largest cyclosporiasis outbreak in the US, which had affected 21 states across the country. The typical end of the season is August 31, so the outbreak's end aligns with expectations. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is still investigating the potential link between the cyclosporiasis outbreak and iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farm de Mexico. So far, there have been seven cyclosporiasis outbreaks in 2026 in the US, and cases are still increasing, although at a continuously decreasing rate week-to-week over the past seven weeks. 

This week, cases increased by 0.5% (+165 cases), much lower than the 1.9% increase over the previous week*. The total number of reported cases in 2026 is 36,510. The states that are still reporting cases have had fewer new cases per week, and some states have stopped updating cyclosporiasis case numbers on their Department of Health websites because of the end of the cyclosporiasis season, such as Indiana and South Carolina.

Some health departments include cases for the entirety of 2026, while others include cases from May 1, 2026 to now.

Michigan has reported the most cases of cyclosporiasis during the largest, multistate outbreak, with 14,718 cases (as of September 6), 366 hospitalizations, and two deaths as of September 3. The state health department website notes the case numbers will be updated on the first Thursday of the month, rather than multiple times a week as they did at the beginning of the outbreak.
